Major Interdisciplinary Programs: Core Units & Resources
-
SC Cancer Center
- South Carolina Biomedical
Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN)
BRIN is a network of 23 SC institutions with bachelor degree
programs in chemistry and biology working together to enhance
biomedical research and educational programs in the state. Funded
by the National Center for Research Resources, BRIN is designed
to increase the state’s NIH research capacity by giving all
faculty and students in science programs the opportunities to
promote their research and move forward on discoveries through
collaboration and contacts within the state’s network of higher
learning institutions. USC, MUSC, and Clemson University are all
considered mentoring institutions for other colleges in the
network.
- Community
Intervention Research
The USC Prevention Research Center (PRC) is funded as part of
the Prevention Research Centers Program of the CDC. PRC’s theme
is “Promoting Health through Physical Activity,” and its mission
is to conduct research that benefits the public’s health and
translates that research into practice.
PRC’s community intervention research promotes physical activity
through environmental and policy supports. For example, PRC has
encouraged Sumter County’s adult residents to form a community
coalition to which the PRC now offers technical assistance,
training, and other resources. The community’s heightened
awareness and advocacy has also led to more sidewalk
construction, enhanced share-the-road projects, created mall
walking and Adopt-a-Park programs, distributed 24,000 maps
identifying walking routes, and established a worksite wellness
policy by one of the county’s largest employers.
