Neuroscience
Neuroscience research at USC currently generates more than $8
million in federal and non-federal grants. More than 40 faculty
are involved in neuroscience-based research across USC departments
including psychology, exercise science, communications science,
nursing, pharmacy, physiology, pharmacology and neuroscience, and
neuropsychiatry. Collaborating institutions such as the VA (neuropsychology,
neurology) and Palmetto Health Richland (neurology) also add
strength to the neuroscience research effort.
Clinical Neuroscience is an important growth area with stroke and
neurogenetics specifically identified as its two most rapidly
growing fields. A current clinical neuroscience project—the Brain
Imaging Center of Excellence—involves a team dedicated to
advancing MRI scanning technologies and marrying them to
non-invasive treatment options that can probe the structure and
function of the brain and ultimately treat and repair many
neurodegenerative disorders afflicting South Carolinians. This
brain-imaging consortium, a collaborative effort with MUSC, is
funded in part through the state’s Endowed Chairs program.
